Dear all,

Interregnum?
The latin word “interregnum” describes the space between two rulers: one leaving and one arriving.
Most often there is no space, but our history books are full of stories where there is an extended period between two kings. Here the interregnum becomes a dangerous phase of conflict or rivalry – or perhaps, occasionally, a liberating phase.
One could say that RUC is experiencing an interregnum-phase just now – with one rector, Hanne Leth Andersen, leaving and another, Rasmus Antoft, moving into the corner office in Building 3. That interregnum will probably only last a few minutes – as keys are reset. We will most likely not be plunged into a dangerous power vacuum.
But we are experiencing a period of transition: We already have several relatively new deputy directors (vicedirektører) in RUC’s central administration. Soon we will not only have new rector. We will also have a new permanent prorector and a new head of department at ISE. Beyond the ongoing management transition, the recent APV (Workplace Assessment) suggests that there is a need for serious reflection on management roles and practices across the university.
On that background it is safe to say that 2026 will be a year where we will focus on rethinking interactions and rebuilding trust across the university in the wake of large-scale reforms, organizational changes, and external criticism as well as internal concern. It will be a year where we will also need to revitalize the RUC 2030 strategy with an intensified focus on research, impact and regional collaboration.
This is no dangerous interregnum. Rather, we should warmly welcome our incoming rector, Rasmus Antoft, as he moves into the corner office in building 3. We look forward to engaging with him in the coming years. We also warmly welcome Hanne Leth Andersen who now continues her career as a professor at IMT. Hanne’s new office is in the south-east corner of building 3.
This is no dangerous interregnum. It’s a peaceful transition – but one that needs to be taken seriously.
Best regards
Peter Kjær

Use Le Chat – A Safe and European Alternative to ChatGPT

by Jesper Simonsen, Professor, IMT
Did you know that when you use ChatGPT or perform a Google search, your data – including your keystrokes, words, and sentences – are sent to servers in the USA? There, they are stored, and according to critical voices like Shoshana Zuboff (2020) in The Age of Surveillance Capitalism, they are sold to third parties and used to tailor algorithms and advertisements. This data collection and exploitation is a core part of the business model for American tech giants.

Why Choose a European Alternative?
We all have a responsibility to support European solutions that respect our privacy and data sovereignty. One of the best European alternatives to ChatGPT is Le Chat, developed by the French AI company Mistral.
Le Chat offers several advantages:
- GDPR Compliance: Your data remains within the EU and is not sold to third parties
- Better Support for European Languages: Including Danish
- Transparent Text Corrections: Le Chat explains its correction suggestions, so you can learn from them
- Better Access to Scientific Literature: With source references, which is crucial for academic work
- Advanced Research Tools: Such as the “deep research” function, which helps generate compelling reports (try researching a topic yourself)
- Stronger Programming Support: According to user feedback, including from FabLab
|
|
Experiences from Teaching
I recently encouraged students in the HumTek 2nd semester to use Le Chat for idea generation during project start-ups this February. The feedback was generally positive, and many students were impressed by its performance. If you want to introduce Le Chat to your students, you can use this slide.

More European Alternatives to American Tech Giants
If you want to reduce your dependence on American tech solutions, there are several European alternatives, such as:
- Translation: DeepL is an excellent alternative to Google Translate
- Search Engine: Qwant is a GDPR-friendly search engine that can be installed in all browsers
You can find more European alternatives at:
A Call to RUC
As a university, we have a special responsibility to protect our data and support European solutions. Just a few days ago, RUC moved all our email and calendar data from our own servers to a Microsoft Cloud – I wonder who now may have access to all our sensitive data. It is time to consider when RUC can replace expensive Microsoft licenses with secure, European alternatives such as OpenDesk, LibreOffice, and OnlyOffice.

It is with great sadness that we announce that Associate Professor Emeritus Søren Lund has passed away.
For many years, Søren was a highly valued colleague, teacher, and researcher who, through his profound professional insight, international outlook, and warm dedication, left a clear and lasting mark on our shared working life. He was known for his ability to create a sense of presence in the classroom and for his genuine interest in the well-being and development of both students and colleagues.
Søren’s intellectual curiosity and generous approach to collaboration inspired many. He always shared his knowledge freely and was never afraid to challenge established perspectives when new ideas could move us forward. His deep scholarly interest lay in understanding how citizens, businesses, and public authorities can best be involved in planning processes. Through numerous research projects, Søren made a significant contribution to the field of participation and insisted on developing practice-oriented knowledge on planning related to desertification, the management of water resources, energy planning, and the development of more sustainable agriculture. Throughout his career, Søren maintained a strong curiosity about international perspectives on participation and planning, and he devoted many years to research projects in Africa, Southeast Asia, and several European countries.
We will miss his humor, his keen eye for detail, and his great care for everyone around him.
Our thoughts are with Søren’s family, friends, and all those who were close to him.
May his memory be honored.

by Linda Lundgaard Andersen
In January, our first in-person METEOR Academy at Roskilde University was wrapped up successfully—and what a week it was. A huge thank you to all participants for the energy, openness, and thoughtful contributions that made the discussions so engaging and the group work so insightful. Around 50 PhDs and Early Career Researchers from 10 European countries joined our HORIZON METEOR project focusing on Methodologies for Teamworking in Eco-Outwards Research.
Over the week, participants got to know the METEOR Project and their Peer Mentoring Groups (PMGs), explored key programme themes, and moved from ideas to concrete collaboration. We worked hands-on with Transdisciplinary Research & Innovation Proposals (TRIPs) through structured idea-generation and mapping exercises, group discussions and presentations, and a roundtable on the potentials and barriers of transdisciplinary work. Training sessions on Transformative Research, Collaboration & Teamwork, and intercultural competence and inclusion supported the group work, ending with reflection, next-step planning, and evaluation of the Academy. The ten groups presented their innovative research proposals at the end of the Academy, and it was amazing to see their interdisciplinary approach and the depth of their subject. The Academy was led by Linda Lundgaard Andersen and Niels Warring but several international scholars from our METEOR university partners joined: Peter Gray, Anne Marit Valle and Mariana Prilutskaya from Nord University, Metin Sardag, Hacettepe University, Juan Carlos Barrio from Burgos and Leyly Kamyabi. The following Academies will be delivered by the University of Jyväskylä (Finland) - followed by Hacettepe University (Türkiye), European University Cyprus (Cyprus), and finally CEEI Burgos (Spain).
For the rest of 2026, all Peer Mentoring Groups will meet with their mentors each month. From Roskilde University, Marta Padovan-Özdemir, Niklas Alexander Chimirri, Niels Warring, and Linda Lundgaard Andersen will serve as mentors.

Continuing and Professional Education (EVU): Master’s Study Board Appoints New Chair
The cross-faculty Master’s Study Board (Studienævnet for Masteruddannelserne) at Roskilde University (RUC) met on Friday 16 February 2026 and elected Associate Professor Marta Padovan Özdemir.as its new Chair. She succeeds Professor Jan Pries-Heje, who for several years led the Master’s Study Board at IMT. In 2024, Marta assumed the position of Programme Director for the Master in Social Sustainability, succeeding Katia Dupret, and has served as vice-chair over the past year.
At the same meeting, the board appointed Associate Professor Jonas Gabrielsen, programme director for the Master in Professional Communication at IKH, as deputy chair. Student representatives elected Anna Skovsby from the same programme as vice-chair.
Several New Members in 2025
During 2025, The Master’s study board welcomed several new members. Associate Professor Anne Liveng joined as programme director for the Master in Health Promotion, succeeding Professor Karen Christensen, while Teaching Associate Professor Anette Højgaard Jønson in autumn assumed the role of programme director for the Master in Organisational Psychology after Professor Steen Visholm. The board also benefits from the experience of Associate Professor Anders Siig Andersen, programme director for the Master in Education and Learning.

Significant increase in enrolment in master’s programmes (Continuing and Professional Education)
The year 2025 marked a period of consolidation for Roskilde University’s continuing and professional education activities (EVU), which now stand out more clearly as a coherent business area with a strong focus on quality and impact. This has already yielded results: enrolment in RUC’s existing Continuing Education Master’s programmes increased markedly in 2025. Compared with the benchmark period 2020–2024, master’s enrolments rose by almost 20 per cent in 2025 - a clear indication of growing demand.
Strengthened Collaboration and a Stronger Foundation for 2026
At the same time, we have expanded collaboration with industry, research institutes, and academic partners to ensure an even more relevant programme portfolio. For example, the Master’s in Social Sustainability—RUC’s first Continuing Master’s programme to do so—has entered into an educational partnership with Guldborgsund Municipality. Building on these results, RUC enters 2026 with a stronger platform for growth and a more cohesive, organisation-wide approach to Continuing and Professional Education (EVU).

Roskilde University's university teacher training course, CUTL (Certificate of University Teaching and Learning), uses problem-oriented project learning as a core learning activity. During the first year the participants work in groups with self-chosen pedagogical problems. On 10 Dec. the 2025-CUTL-cohort presented their work at an open seminar as part of the assessment process. If you missed this presentation – you can read a short summary of the 5 projects and their key outputs here. If you want to know more, do not hesitate to contact EAE at adm-eae@ruc.dk.
Creative & Affective Pedagogies in PPL - Integrating creative and affective pedagogies into RUC’s PPL model to address the overemphasis on rational problem‑solving and lack of space for embodied, emotional, and imaginative learning. Key output/s
- Practical teaching experiments (e.g., embodied activities, sensory journaling).
- Recommendations for fostering affective learning environments.
Making Sense of Fragmented Courses – Fragmented course structures impose hidden labour on teachers and cognitive overload on students; improving coherence requires both institutional recognition of coordination work and structured pedagogical reflection. Key output/s:
- Reflection guide for teaching teams.
- Recommendations for strengthening coherence and collaborative teaching practices
Pedagogical Opportunities in Group Splits – When a group split is inevitable it can be valuable learning events when supported through early mediation, open communication, and supervision; solo projects can still fulfil PPL principles.
Key output/s
- Criteria for a “successful split”.
- Recommendations for improved group formation and conflict mediation.
Building a Chatbot for Reflective Project Learning
- A PPL chatbot can support student groups to sharpen and clarify their problem formulation, understand better how their project connects to PPL principles and think more coherently about theory, methods, and empirical focus.
Key output/s
- Custom PPL chatbot.
- Design principles for reflective, dialogic AI in education.
- Recommendations for responsible, pedagogically aligned AI use.
Developing a Pedagogically Aligned AI Assistant - AI can strengthen supervision by offering structured, formative feedback, but it must remain a hybrid tool - supportive but never replacing the relational and developmental aspects of human supervision.
Key output/s
- Prototype AI supervision assistant.
- Policy recommendations for AI integration and professional development.
- Guidelines for ethical, transparent, and pedagogically grounded AI use.

The GAI Education Network at RUC, GAIN, invites for seminar with presentation and panel discussion: AI declarations: Formality or formative practice?
Time: 20 Mar. 2026, 13:00-15:00 Place: 03.1-S03
Students at RUC are increasingly required to declare their use of AI in assignments and projects. But what actually happens when they do? Does it reshape their relationship with AI, methodology, and their own learning process, or is it just another box to tick? The answers have direct implications for how we design assignments, frame learning objectives, and supervise in a reality where AI is already part of students' everyday practice.
