Peter’s Column

Dear all,

After a long, intense and sometimes also difficult year, we are approaching summer vacation. It’s been a long, intense and sometimes challenging year. It was also yet another year characterized by remarkable research achievements, dedicated efforts to deliver great teaching and supervision, and excellent support from our administrative staff. And lots of meetings…

After the summer, we will reform the format for the IMT all-staff meetings. The meetings will have a more distinct focus on research, teaching and impact. That will involve invited speakers and better facilitated shared debates on selected themes. And perhaps less focus on management issues – and an even better selection of songs. It may also entail fewer meetings – but hopefully meetings that you don’t want to miss!

The changing format of all-staff meetings is inspired by discussions in the Department Council and the Local Collaboration Committee on meeting formats where we have reconsidered agendas, roles and formats to make meetings more productive.

We kick off the academic year with the IMT Department Seminar on 20 August in Roskilde Kongres- & Idrætscenter. Here we will focus on the coming RUC “research signatures” and examples of how we can build even more productive research environments. We have an excellent line-up of speakers that I hope will inspire the debates at the seminar.

I wish you all a great summer vacation!

Peter Kjær

Disseminating Research Through Podcasts

At The Danish Centre for Research in Early Childhood Education and Care, we continuously work to disseminate our research in formats that can reach a wider range of audiences, including researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.

One of these formats is the podcast ‘Barn & Daginstitution’, where we each month explore current themes in early childhood education and care research. In the podcast, host Anna Lind Greiner speaks with researchers from RUC and AAU about topics such as play, language, art, gender, nature, care, inclusion, and norms.

Among the guests, Professor Emeritus Jan Kampmann has discussed the intensification and institutionalization of childhood, Associate Professor Marta Padovan-Özdemir has spoken about equality and diversity in early childhood institutions, and Professor Eva Gulløv has talked about children’s friendships.

To strengthen the podcast’s connection to pedagogical practice, one listener in each episode is given the opportunity to ask the participating researcher a question. In this way, the conversation also takes its point of departure in the questions and dilemmas that are prominent in practice.

As we continue to develop the format along the way, we are also seeing growing engagement. We hope the podcast can serve as inspiration for how research can be communicated in a more accessible way – also for those of you working in entirely different research fields.

If this has sparked your curiosity, you can follow the podcast wherever you usually listen to podcasts.

When AI Writes: What Should Universities Assess?

This question was at the heart of the DUN Conference 2026, where discussions moved beyond concerns about cheating and control towards learning, judgement, and academic formation. Rather than asking whether students use generative AI, the challenge is understanding how they use it – and how we, as educators, can support critical, reflective, and responsible engagement with these tools.

At the same time, new questions emerge: Should written assignments remain central to higher education? And what happens to the university’s collective memory if we stop writing things down?

Roskilde University researchers Jan Pries-Heje, Morten Hertzum, and Benedicte Fleron, all from the Sustainable Digitalisation research group, have just published ”Projektledelse i en kompleks virkelighed” (Title in English: Project Management in a Complex Reality). This marks the fourth time that Roskilde University, in collaboration with Mannaz, has conducted Denmark’s largest survey of project managers. This year, more than 2,400 respondents participated in the study, which explores, among other topics, the current status of Generative AI, sustainability, and digital transformation, as well as how organisations manage projects in crisis.

Call for Contributions to the CSS Lunch Series – Share Your Thoughts, Reflections, and Dilemmas

Dear colleague,

Are you researching something that you consider to relate to social sustainability or a closely connected field?

The Centre for Social Sustainability (CSS) organises recurring academic exchanges over Wednesday lunch – the so-called “CSS Lunch Series”.

These lunch sessions are not intended as lectures. We share unfinished reflections, ideas, and dilemmas related to research, problem fields, analyses, applications, and more. All research staff at RUC who are interested in mutual intellectual exchange are welcome to participate.

Sign up now with your own contribution (please send it directly to me katia@ruc.dk to avoid unnecessary email traffic ), and you will receive calendar invitations for the rest of the autumn programme.

Please include:

  1. Title
  2. Preferred date: which Wednesday between 12:00 and 13:00 during the autumn semester would suit you
  3. 4–5 lines describing your unfinished idea or dilemma

Please feel free to write in English so that everyone can take part. However, it is absolutely fine if you would prefer to hold the dialogue lunch session in Danish (please indicate this when signing up).

If you have not participated before, you can read the three principles for participation below:

The principles of the CSS lunch series are:
Reflexivity – To increase dialogue the presentation is maximum 20min about a challenge you experience in your current work on/with social sustainability. You are invited to share your concerns and doubts, and we welcome your open-ended reflections that can be shared and discussed with the participants for the remaining time.
Reciprocity - To increase the atmosphere of mutual exchange and dynamic dialogue - if you are attending one CSS lunch, we expect you to also present your work and matters of concern at some point in the same semester. (The first time you attend, is “free of charge” for you to get acquainted with the format, and the atmosphere).   Inclusion - We welcome presentations from all colleagues - new or experienced, and all disciplines are welcome. Whether your work is on/with social sustainability is for you to judge.

The CSS lunch goals are:

Atmosphere of reciprocal exchange: Nurture and support an atmosphere of academic curiosity and reciprocal reflection around a shared topic, namely social sustainability
Network: Strengthen the network of scholars at Roskilde University that work with social sustainability

You can find previous programmes on the CSS website under CSS News.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Leading Co-Creation from a Place-Based Perspective
The Professional Network for Co-Creation and Cross-Sector Collaboration and the Centre for Social Sustainability are jointly hosting a seminar. (The first part of the day is reserved for network members.)

Time: 13:30–16:00
Location: Building 04.2_47

This seminar focuses on the significance of place for collaboration, leadership and change, and on how we can work more effectively with place-based initiatives. What does it really mean to lead when solutions cannot be designed centrally, but must emerge through and within the places, people and relationships of which they are a part?

Open to external participants. The seminar offers an opportunity for both professional inspiration and networking with others working with co-creation and cross-sector collaboration. The programme and registration link will follow.

June 22. Book launching

Dear colleagues, partners, and friends,

I would like to invite you to the launch of a new book, Start med stedet – hvad er på spil i forandring af landskaber (Start with Place – What Is at Stake in Transforming Landscapes), which I have co-authored with Anne Tortzen and Annika Agger.

The book will be published by Djøf Publishing on 22 June, and we will celebrate the publication at St. Kannikestræde 19, Copenhagen K, on Monday, 22 June, from 3:00 pm, with professional presentations and an opportunity for informal conversation.

Sign up here...

A few words about the book:

How can we transform Danish landscapes without leaving those affected feeling overlooked or overruled?

The climate and biodiversity crises mean that Danish landscapes must be transformed at a pace and scale we have never seen before. Agricultural land is being converted into nature areas, coastlines are being protected, and river valleys are being adapted to climate change. These changes affect many people and evoke strong emotions.

Start med stedet sheds light on the dynamics that unfold both on and “beneath the surface” in collaborations between municipalities, landowners, and local communities. Drawing on three cases, the book provides insight into what is at stake in collaborative efforts to transform places and offers practical approaches to navigating these processes wisely.

This is a book for everyone working with landscape transformation in practice.

I hope to see you there!
